The Great Wave off Kanagawa is one of the most reproduced piece of art by Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849). This was created using a technique known as Ukiyo-e, a type of Japanese woodblock printing method made during the Edo Period. Ukiyo-e, which originated as a Buddhist term, means "floating world" and refers to the impermanence of the world.
